alright pals we need to settle this nonexistent debate. here's my logic (iliad purists please don't come at me i take my narrative with a grain of madeleine miller) - WHO PLAYS WHAT ROLE IN THE PATROCHILLES/COBRA HUSBANDS CROSSOVER OF THE CENTURY

patroclus!kreese makes MORE sense in the way that. patroclus/kreese take an emotionally pacifist and protective stance as the second in command to their best friend, who holds the power and respect of thousands. within their respective wars, patroclus/kreese play particularly feminine roles - patroclus, as a healer and as a partner to achilles, and kreese in the sense of his maternal instinct/stand-ins for the women he empathizes with and protects. patroclus/kreese have a hard comeuppance - patroclus is exiled by his own father, kreese's own mother kills herself and his own father is absent; as opposed to achilles!silver, who is born a demigod and a prince. achilles/silver hold interests in music, and both lean into the grace of feminity to aid their gait (if that even makes sense. i'll explain if it doesn't. but trust me). patroclus/kreese watch achilles/silver not become someone they aren't, but grow into the men they were always bound to be as the products of war and destiny and as people bound by their lineage/family - achilles to his godly blood, silver to his own last name - and they become violent, ruthless, and reckless in the decisions made for themselves. achilles/silver draw blood to a boy that has done absolutely nothing to them in the name of their best friend's death, metaphorical or literal. patroclus/kreese must watch this violence fester in them and accept the way this must be, but that does not mean they accept what their loved one has become. the blood is on their hands as much as it is on achilles/silver's. everything is done for love.

but BUT BUT - patroclus!silver in the sense that he is his best friend's second in command. that he will watch achilles/kreese lose himself to the violence, allow it, hell, become a violent person himself in just being complicit to it. that he will shape himself into an entirely new person to be his therapon. and where patroclus!silver cannot take the violence and is still the twiggish boy sitting under that fig tree, achilles!kreese has learned through the captain of his life (his mother, if you will, i feel so cringe typing this out but turner-thesis in a sense) that the violence is to be inevitable. and the lifestyle becomes a prophecy. a self fulfilling one. and everyone around him dies whether that be through fate or by his own hands and when he finally loses patroclus/silver, things fall apart. the worst part of it? it's his own doing.

at their core though, they altogether share similar story beats - both patrochilles/the cobras travel to mount pelion/mount cobra (that's what the soundtrack called it, and therefore that's what i'm calling the korean dojo. OKAY.) to train themselves as young warriors under an esteemed mentor, chiron/sensei kim. the war.

whatever. i just need your thoughts. and if you've read the iliad/tsoa i want your hot potato thoughts thrown at me or whatever. idk. idk this is all in an idk donut.

people be wondering why there's no appearance from hades in any of the sagas, especially the underworld saga (even if he wasn't in the odyssey itself) i have a theory!

spoilers for vengeance saga and future ithaca saga!

do you not understand how busy that poor guy/god is during odysseus' terrible, horrible, no good, bad journey home™

first he has 7 freshly made pancakes men (14 if you count the club smash noises in survive, but we'll go with 7 for this) sent by chef polyphemus, appearing one after the other.

not long after that, you have 550 very soaked (drowned) men pop through in the blink of an eye, no thanks to his younger brother, mr ruthlessness himself, poseidon.

then while he's still counting/organising the paperwork for them, a young man appears, who happens to be very drunk (talking about pig men?)

not long after that, somehow a warship filled with mortal men breaks into the underworld, ALL ALIVE, and the (king? leader? captain? he's not too sure at this point) starts singing outside his front door about becoming a monster????? but before he can sic cerberus on them, they leave on their own

finally he thinks he has a break when 6 men holding torches (are some missing limbs?!?) have now joined the party down under (granted they're all in no mood to party, they weren't expecting to become snacks for a sea monster)

and just as quick as they'd arrived, in a flash (just like the snap of lightning that took them out) 36 crispy/fried men (gods damn it zeus) appear, weapons drawn like they were about to attack someone (how does that one guy at the front swing such a big sword?)

at this point hades is wondering what the fuck is happening upstairs, because ain't no way these 600 men are all from the same fleet/island under one guy's command (turns out the captain's name is odysseus)

he thinks his prayers are answered because he has had peace for 7 years, just the normal flow of souls into the underworld- (wait whats that chanting)

suddenly those previous 600 souls are flying their way outta the underworld (he didn't know they could do that) while singing "six hundred men! (six hundred)" on repeat

they return though (thank the gods, he didn't need to go soul hunting) and once again he thinks everything will be calm

(he also found out from zeus, that their brother got his godly-ass handed to him by that MORTAL odysseus! WHO USED HIS OWN WEAPON AGAINST HIM (something to help make him laugh over spring & summer and while he waits for his beautiful persephone to return home))

he finally thinks his time with odysseus and the souls that come from him/being around him is over. when in minutes of each other, the souls of 108 men appear, all killed in gruesome ways. then they tell him that they were killed by beggar who then revealed himself as king odysseus, from trying to marry his wife and take over his kingdom (ok very understandable murder then)

at this point hades doesn't know whether he's excited for, or dreading the day he actually meets odysseus in the distant future (yes distant, i don't care about/ don't accept the telegony. let the poor man enjoy the rest of his life with his son and wife!!!)

but yeah, understandable why you don't hear from him throughout the sagas

Recently Youtube's algorithm really wants me to watch Schindler's List and I never had so the other night I sat down and actually watched it.

Having a lot of thoughts about it but a major one I keep coming back to is how even an immensely and deeply flawed human being can go against "just following orders" and instead put in the work to actually help.

It may never be fully enough. It may never save as many as you'd hoped. But when you have a choice to either follow orders or save your fellow humans in front of you, I hope you choose the latter.

Schindler died in poverty. He was not a renown war hero nor was he at all famous or widely beloved. But he saw that he could help, even in some small way, and so he helped.

He was a Nazi who saw what the Nazis were doing to Jews and said no more. Enough. If I can even spare those under my charge, maybe a few extras, then at least I will have tried to do something about this.

I think a lot of people do not fancy this type of activism. It is messy, dangerous, and often completely thankless. Schindler survived as long as he did after the war due to those he saved helping him with donations. He was not popular in his hometown due to his association with Nazis, he was not popular in Germany, he was not popular in Argentina. His businesses all failed. His wife left him. A movie about his deeds was released several years after his death, where he would receive none of the benefits. He went to prison multiple times for simply refusing to hate Jews.

I think a lot of people like to think they're activists, but are sorely unprepared for doing this type of work, and then in truth become activists in name only. This is hard work. But without him, another thousand or so people would be on that death toll.

He took his position of extreme power- a Nazi owning a factory almost entirely operated by Jews, making oodles of money off that cheap slave labor- and said you know what? No. I'm not doing that. I can't save everyone, but as long as they are within my factory, you will not kill my workers. As long as I'm here you aren't harming one hair on the head of any Jew under my care. You're not sending or keeping them in Auschwitz. You're not randomly executing them for entertainment. They're people. You're not murdering them.

"Just following orders" they say. But they didn't have to. They could have helped. They could have did what he did, look around and say "what the fuck am I doing here", and stop. He did. They could have. They didn't.
